On Saturday, I laid out all the DNR maps and plotted our route. For a few sections I was also able to use Lynn Diebel's Canoeing Northern/Southern Minnesota books. I found her book extremely helpful on the Rum River trip. She details hazards to watch out for and interesting sights that may not be immediately noticed.
When I charted our route, I stayed conservative, planning the longest days at about 40 miles. We will cross a few large lakes, the biggest being Lake Winnibigoshish, which is the third largest lake in Minnesota. Its huge. Canoeing on this lake will be perilous. We plan to just hug the shore. Has anybody out there canoed this lake?
The way I planned it, the trip will take 27 days ... with perfect weather. So it seems planned fairly well right now, with gaps for bad weather. I was surprised to find some class III rapids on the river as well. They are right before Saint Cloud, right after Sauk Rapids. The DNR maps (and Dibel's book) make it clear - these rapids must be scouted out before they are run. They are right after a dam and they must be intense if there are so many danger markings everywhere. No fear, if need be, Melody will make sure we portage.
