Honestly, you are probably going to be able to do however many miles you set your mind to. The longest we have done is 45, which we did yesterday as well as the day before. Just plan on being exhausted!

Wow, that sounds amazing! Especially the canoe flipping part... I can not think that the water could have been much more than 40 degrees. Brr!

Today was less than desirable... Though it was far better than yesterday I assure you. Life is good over in Steven's Square. How is it down in the 'hood'?

Planning is also going pretty well, however it is hard to imagine how it will all shake out. Day to day business has kept my mind away from the thought of being there, but as far as I know the mountain is still in existence. How is your planning going?

I'm hoping to get into the cross-country ride. I live down in Dallas. Mississippi sounds like a sweet trip as well.

Why I'm involved in Venture Expeditions:
In college, I got to know Aaron Smith. Even though he was from Wisconsin, he was a great guy, and when he and two others decided to bike across the US and raise money for a cause, I wanted to assist them however I could. Now I have a chance to lead a trip myself. I've always wanted to visit Itasca State Park and canoe the Mississippi. When I've talked to people who've canoed the entire 2500 miles of the river, they've told me the most beautiful stretch is in Northern Minnesota. That motivates me to do this trip, but not as much as knowing there is a real solution out there for world hunger. It is intimidating to think about, but isn't our society advanced enough in the twenty-first century that we could create a system for the population of the world to sustain itself? A monumental task to be sure, but so was irradicating smallpox. There will be no deu ex machina, but I know I can do something to assist a small area of the world that has been affected by hunger and war more than I will know in my life. And that is what we will be raising money to do- make a portion of Southern Sudanese villagers able to sustain themselves and other returning refugees with simple agricultural necessities ... and the education to continue the food harvest.

An Upstream Battle

Props to three guys who are kayaking the Mississippi from St. Paul to New Orleans!

Melody and I met with these intrepid voyagers and talked about details and motivations for what they are doing. They too are raising funds for an organization. They plan to raise $20,000 for International Justice Mission, an organization that is working to end slavery (specifically in the sex trade). These guys were fun to talk to and have big goals for the next two months.

If you have a minute, check out their… Continue

Thirty Days ... Or Less

On Saturday, I laid out all the DNR maps and plotted our route. For a few sections I was also able to use Lynn Diebel's Canoeing Northern/Southern Minnesota books. I found her book extremely helpful on the Rum River trip. She details hazards to watch out for and interesting sights that may not be immediately noticed.

When I charted our route, I stayed conservative, planning the longest days at about 40 miles. We will cross a few large lakes, the biggest being Lake Winnibigoshish, which is the t… Continue

Old Man River Claims Three More

Lately any article about the Mississippi catches my eye. Even driving or biking over a bridge gives me mixed feelings of excitement and anticipation. Today, the river's force appeared evident down by St. Anthony Falls. The south wind blew strong, making the raging current seem even faster.

I'm thinking about that current as I read this article from the Star Tribune: http://www.startribune.com/local/stpaul/18747819.html
It mentions that yet another body was found in the river yesterday. H… Continue

Our Tax Dollars at Work

Yes! One week after calling the DNR, All nine detailed maps of the Mississippi in Minnesota are on my coffee table.

But not only those nine fold-out sections, two wire-bound Boating DNR maps of the river sections of the metro area. One through downtown Mpls and St. Paul, the other is from Hastings to Iowa. They also sent a National Park Map, because 72 miles of the Mississippi through the metro are considered a national river and recreational area.

The DNR has maps of most major rivers in Minn… Continue
